Today it’s the 75th anniversary that the gates of Auschwitz are open and I finish this book with deep thoughts and try to imagine the cruelty and what human beings can do to each other’s in this particular environment in their very worst and best. They both survived against all odds and because of the diary Gustav kept hidden during the years he spent in camps, he was able to tell his story with expressive details.
I’m just in awe of people who had to suffer this horrific event, those who did things about it and those that have the courage and strength to go beyond what was expected of you at that time. Even the astonishing reunions are treated simply, without fuss and without ever forgetting the appalling weight of suffering behind them. I have read many books about The Holocaust and this was the most well written. Yet despite man's inhumanity to man, the love between this father and son, and the extended"family" of fellow prisoners, and the wellspring of never ending hope, will keep you turning the page. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations Well we've all heard of the atrocities about the concentration camps established by the hideous Nazi regime and Germany as a so called humane western European country, but nothing can prepare you for the graphic and outright disgusting behaviour of these animals on the Jewish people of Europe. The Stone Crusher: The True Story of a Father and Son's Fight for Survival in Auschwitz I can not say enough about this book. We know the conditions these people were forced to work under and endure were barbarous, but to read such events and remind yourself that this really happened to these poor living souls is just beyond belief at times; that it was not all not discovered by the Allies until the end of the war could be seen as deplorable. Published Yet despite man's inhumanity to man, the love between this father and son, and the extended"family" of fellow prisoners, and the wellspring of never ending hope, will keep you turning the page. This format worked perfectly for me, it was laced with information, having read so much about the Holocaust and WWII, I always think that I'm aware of all the major details, and I was proved very wrong as several things here I had never come across.I was expecting this to be a fictionalised account, similar to The Tattooist of Auschwitz. If there are moments when Dronfield’s extraordinary book sounds more like a peculiarly gruesome thriller, readers should remind themselves that none of this is fiction.

I was in shock as I read this book. It reads like a novel, but it is truly sadly a true story of father and son and family. I've got angry, sad, and cried when Father and Son are reunited at the end of this tragand factual evidence from Gustav's hidden diary that he kept well concealed from his persecutors, so that it could be used as evidence to bring these animals to justice.
This book inspired me, and it makes me even more thankful and grateful for the life I am currently living and that I shouldn't take it for granted. Highly recommended to read Should be required reading for All high school students, so that history like this is never repeated. Harrowing, bravery and a sheer determination to survive sums up the family and friends.
