You reach the base of the falls by crossing a footbridge over the ice-blue water.
We ended up taking a bit of a shortcut towards the end of the loop as we were following foot prints which we noticed were taking us off the trail on my offline map but we decided to roll with it. We also took the side trip to Hidden Lake. Yoho Lake is so pretty! Waterproof boots were definitely nice to have, trail was a bit muddy in some places and there’s a lot of snow at the top and but no special gear needed. The path from the car park is paved and suitable for wheelchairs, but there are also opportunities to clamber over rocks and get amidst the mist if that's your thing. The return drive back down this road is a worthwhile trip in its own right with fantastic Yoho valley and mountain scenery.
Yoho Lake is so pretty! we made it past them. Apart from the distant mountain views, in summer there are some close-up distractions to any complaining leg muscles. It may work out cheaper to buy an annual pass if you are staying for a week or more or are planning other park visits. Then be sure to take the Iceline Trail on the way down for some amazing views of Takakkaw falls, the ice fields/glaciers and the whole valley. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. There is a campground, toilets and picnic tables near the car park..Takakkaw is the Cree people's word for 'magnificent' and nobody is arguing. It's a series of forested switchbacks before it levels out for the rest of the trail.
Highly recommend! There is also a backcountry campground on the west side. You need a pass for entry to any Canadian national park and these can be purchased from the visitor information centre at Field (on the Trans-Canada Highway about 3km west of the Yoho Valley Road turnoff). Lost the footprints and had to do a fair bit of bushwhacking but it wasn’t too bad and the views were incredible.
Love this hike!
We went counter clockwise which made the second half of the hike a breeze Great little day hike. The 255m falls are fed by the Daly Glacier (which is out of sight from this section of the trail). I would recommend this trial to anyone looking for a bit of a challenge. Recording time included stops for pictures, water, bathroom break, a picnic and the detour to hidden lakes. The trail is in decent condition with no deadfall or washouts.
The sound of the water crashing down is like the call of the Sirens. As the name suggests, this tiny (but vividly colored) lake is hidden by the tall trees circling its banks but you won't miss it from this trail above. we made it past them. Les chiens sont les bienvenus sur ce sentier mais seulement en laisse.Note: The road leading to this trailhead closes seasonally.
Stunning views from the top!Great trail. Highly recommend! Indeed the lake is fed by the same glacial sources that flow on to Yoho Lake ahead. The first kilometer past the hostel is a modest incline. Very few people on the trail which was nice as well. Takakkaw Falls and Yoho Lake Loop is a 6.7 mile loop trail located near Field, British Columbia, Canada that features a lake and is rated as moderate. This trail passes this point again on the return leg, so you can leave it for later if the crowds are particularly busy or the light poor for photography.
It is typically hiked as a loop/circuit including Takakkaw Falls, the Iceline Trail, Little Yoho Valley, and Laughing Falls.
It’s steep going up and coming down but middle section is a great comfortable walk. There is a campground, toilets and picnic tables near the car park..Takakkaw is the Cree people's word for 'magnificent' and nobody is arguing. It was amazing. Was a great hike! Yoho lake was very nice, some snow on the trail. Wildflowers such as globe flowers, yellow glacier lilies and pink mountain heather line the trail with splashes of color. The glacial lake, at the foot of Wapta Mountain, makes a good spot for a break or lunch. Recommend bringing a towel and change of clothes so you can take a dip in the beautiful lake before heading back down.Beauty easy/moderate loop from the HI hostel.
