The track begins from the car park 100 m above the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre. This junction is also where the return loop will bring you back later in the walk. Don't park in the lodge carpark. The Kamahi loop is a smaller track through goblin forest/kamahi trees, while the Patea loop covers a larger area. Use the bathroom at the Stratford Mountain House down the road because there are no toilets at the Plateau car park.
