It lays out the action and all its little twists and is so strong in its portrayal that both the happy ending and subsequent "real" one both seem sides of a surreal coin. If redemption were a snuff film, Bad Lieutenant would be it.

The lead character on the surface has no redeeming virtues - he's corrupt, he's sexually and morally deviant, he is really and truly on the slide. The site's Critics Consensus reads: "Befitting its unorthodox origins, this Bad Lieutenant benefits from Werner Herzog's typically fearless direction and a delightfully unhinged Nicolas Cage in the title role." It contains one of the best performances ever captured on film by Harvey Keitel.

The genius of Ferrara is that he shows the crimes, the hatred, the violence, the disease, the sex and emotional-brutality with no-garnish or stylization--as-is. 27 out of 39 found this helpful.

Ferrara crafted an extremely unlikeable film with obnoxious characters, but realistic enough to make you think about the consequences of your each action if you don't learn to repent. There are some really memorable scenes with Cage, such as when he pulls a gun on a senior citizen and when he does crack with a criminal played by Xzibit. This movie did not have that. And that ladies and gents is what makes this film shine. The film is not perfect, but it is a film that is entertaining, thrilling and is a roller coaster ride in the lead characters life. Lauren Whitney Pennington If they say so.

"Bad Lieutenant" Review Courage may be the only word that can possibly describe Harvey Keitel's performance as the "bad lieutenant," a cop so burned out, strung out and hopeless that to watch him come to life onscreen is simultaneously frightening, pathetic, sad, frustrating and infuriating. The conclusion to the film is really the only ending that could have been believable, but still no compassion.

Then again, when has he let us down? What more can I say? Third, this movie is slooooooow. The vampire speech – which is crucial to the Lieutenant – was written two minutes before it was shot. This is bull of a very high order.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is a dark, edgy crime drama with a convoluted plot that goes to some extreme places.

This depicts a cop that has no respect for himself, his wife, his children or anyone else for that matter.

Keitel is dead on here and I found myself wondering how deeply immersed in the character he actually was during the drug use scenes.

This movie for me never really got going, It's all over the place and there isn't really any main plot the film sticks to, After reading reviews saying how brilliant this was I felt kind of let down but this is just my opinion, The only good thing to take away from it was Cages performance was very well done he played a good solid part but apart from that it's a hard film to get into.
